On October 10th 2008 — nearly a year after its inception — Gislewiki officially migrated from Wikia to its own hosting and domain, provided by the Norwegian hosting service Subsys.no. Reasons for this included but were not limited to:

• Differences in wiki skin policies
• Disturbing advertising, forced via Wikia's proprietary skin
• Slowness and unreliability of servers

Reasons for choosing Subsys.no as our new host are:

• Speed and uptime of servers
• Inexpensive prices
• Company and servers located in Norway

[edit] Important notes concerning the migration

• The migration was executed during October 9th and October 10th 2008.
• All pages were successfully migrated, along with their respective histories.
• Images had to be re-inserted to the system, thus losing the nicknames and summaries associated with the uploads. However, the image description pages were salvaged.
• Articles in the Live show namespace had to be recreated due to human error. The histories and original timestamps have been lost as a result.
• Due to Wikia's privacy policy, user data could not be imported. Your Wikia account will not work on the new Gislewiki; please re-register your account on www.gislewiki.com.
  • Users that had a userpage on Wikia's version of Gislewiki have been re-created by admins. Temporary passwords have been delivered to all previous users.
  • Userpages for Wikia staff and community team have been deleted. Empty (or default) user talks for these users have been deleted too. Talk pages with content have been preserved.
• The Wikia copy of Gislewiki will apparently not be deleted, due to matters beyond our control or persuation. However, it is strongly discouraged to edit that version, as we strive to keep the most up-to-date version on www.gislewiki.com.
  • As such, the Main Page on Wikia has been changed, the sidebar contracted and a site notice written to promote users to migrate to our new domain.
• Every page will now have hit counters, located at the footer of each page.
• Some (not often used) functionality that was available on Wikia is not available here, due to Wikia having installed more extensions. If you wish a certain extension be installed to restore or add functionality to Gislewiki, please contact Sysrq868.
  • This includes the (never used) forum and its namespace.
  • This also reduces the search functions to MediaWiki's defaults instead of WikiaSearch.
• Software information and installed extensions can be obtained from Special:Version.
• The hosting costs us roundly 60 euro (or 80 US dollars) per year. We plead for donations from our userbase to keep this wiki running.

• Please register your account.
• Update your bookmarks.
• If you find any links around the internet to the Wikia version, please urge the link owner to change it to the www.gislewiki.com counterpart.
• Enjoy our new, faster, shinier habitat!

[edit] Update September 28th 2009

It seems that Wikia decided to resurrect their copy of Gislewiki by reinstating the old main page and menu and deleting the site notice. This was not wholly unexpected, but still is bad news; our independent dot com can do nothing in Google ranks against Wikia's massive machines. However, a more subtle and conservative way of redirecting users to dot com was initiated, and hopefully this will be pleasing to Wikia.
